Following the 2025 festival exhibition which focused on life in the River Rother we look skywards. We reflect on birdlife, its sounds, its importance to the natural world and its visual beauty through the eyes of two of Kevis House’s artists, artist and printmaker Rebecca Jewell PHD RCA, and artist, author and filmmaker, James Roberts.

At the introductory event at Leconfield Hall James Roberts will focus on landscape and birdsong. On show at Kevis House throughout the festival will be his work in ink and salt, expressive representations of the wild.

James will share both the preview event and exhibition with Rebecca Jewell who will explain how her work references both the beauty and wonder of birds but also their fragility and vulnerability. In contrast to James’s predominantly mono work, Rebecca will be creating printed feather collages and a ‘mist net’ installation with colourful songbirds and birdsong notes printed directly onto feathers. Pieces reference flocks of parakeets, birds flying at sunset, and the extraordinary distances some birds migrate.

‘We are in an age when birdlife is dwindling….but Jewell’s work points toward a happier outcome, a reconnection with the primal wonder of birds, a recognition of how poor our world would be without the feathered Other.. Jonathan Franzen
